| General Instructions | January 03, 2007 |
Care begins the same day as the piercing.
Infection can be avoided when instructions are followed carefully.
The piercer is responsible for thoroughly explaining care procedures and why they are important. Procedures differ with type of piercing and where they are located.~
Explanation takes time and must be accounted for when making appointments. (Appointments should include time for explanations).
General care instructions should be given before piercing, as for any body manipulation, however it is better to give detailed information following the piercing because customer's will pay more attention to instructions. Experience shows that before piercing, customer attention is reduced due to worry about pain associated with the procedure.
The piercer must give the customer a detailed written description of care procedures adapted to specific piercing. Oral instructions are not sufficient, customers do not always think of questions at the time of piercing.
Piercing areas may involve skin (eyebrow, ear, nose or navel), mucous membranes (tongue, genitals), or both (lips and some genital piercings).
All types of piercings must be cleaned at least once a day beginning on the day of piercing, continuing until completely healed.
Procedures differ with areas.
Eyebrow, ear, nose, navel
Recommended procedure for cleaning pierced skin:
" Be gentle
" Remove any crusted, dry matter around the wound with warm soapy water
" Gently rotate the jewelry in the orifice
" After cleaning, rinse well with warm water or sterile saline solution
" Dry well with clean cloth or paper towel
Use warm water and mild (PH neutral) soap, sterile compress or Q-tip (avoid cotton because fibers may stick to the wound). Warm water softens dried secretions, easing their removal without rubbing, thus avoiding irritation.
Soap eliminates impurities and bacteria. Rinsing is important. Sterile saline solution (sodium chloride 0.9%) is available in 10 or 20 ml vials, or in bottles of 125 and 250 ml. It is extremely important to thoroughly dry the wound; humidity favors infection.
During the first few days following the piercing, it is recommended to use an antiseptic solution such as 10% povidone iodine solution with sterile compresses or Q-tips. Apply after having eliminated dried secretions and before rinsing. Prolonged use may cause allergic reactions or irritation. It is usually recommended to use an antiseptic solution for a period of 7 to 10 days.
Lips, tongue
Skin care, as described above, applies to the skin side of the piercing. For the side that is in contact with the inside of the mouth, antiseptic mouthwash should be used twice a day and after every meal for about 8 days.
Follow instructions for diluting mouthwash. Don't prolong use of solutions that have alcohol in the formula, they could cause irritation and even yeast infections (thrush). 14 days maximum recommended.
Genital piercing
Skin care, as described above, applies to the skin side of the piercing. For the side that is in contact with the mucous membrane, cleanse with antiseptic soap with a povidone iodine base, the same as used in gynecology. It is extremely important to rinse well (with sterile saline solution) and dry thoroughly after cleansing. Use antiseptic soap for 10 to 15 days.
For all piercings
Refrain from oral contact (tongue piercing), orogenital and sexual contact (tongue and genital piercing) for at least 3 weeks following the piercing. In the case of genital piercings, use condoms to protect piercings until completely healed.
Avoid wearing tight clothing until piercing is healed. However, it is recommended to wear a bra to protect nipple piercing and underwear to protect genital piercing.
